Crone's Curse: Wisdom Forsaken
My latest piece, Crone's Curse, delves into the deep, often neglected, truths of our human experience. This depiction of a decrepit old witch stands as both a symbol of ancient wisdom and a haunting reminder of the consequences we face when we forsake our ancestral roots. Her form, gnarled and twisted, extends into chords of ancient branches that merge into her, suggesting a profound connection to the forgotten roots of our past.
The black and white palette I chose for this painting further emphasizes the starkness of our current reality—a world increasingly detached from its spiritual and natural foundations. The background is a void of deep black, representing the collective unconsciousness of a world that has lost its way. The witch, both frightening and mesmerizing, is not a figure to fear, but a reflection of what we become when we sever our ties to the wisdom that once grounded us.
In today's chaotic world, where wars ravage nations and humanity struggles to hold onto its core values, Crone's Curse is a reminder of what happens when fear, ignorance, and attachment dominate our collective psyche. These gnarled chords are not just physical—they symbolize the attachments we have to fear and worry, the burdens of past traumas, and the psychic attacks that come from holding onto outdated beliefs. By cutting these chords, we can dissolve the attachments that bind us to suffering, releasing us into a state of clarity and peace.
The witch, in her decrepitude, reminds us that forsaking wisdom comes at a cost. When we disregard the lessons of the past—whether it be in personal, social, or even global contexts—we lose not only a sense of who we are but also the power to move forward with integrity. Wars, as reflections of collective fear and misunderstanding, are one such manifestation of this disconnection. We must remember that the battles we face externally often stem from internal conflicts, where fear has taken root in the psyche, leading to chaos.
Crone’s Curse invites us to look inward and examine the places where we have abandoned wisdom—both in our personal lives and as a global community. It calls on us to reconnect with the earth, with the teachings of our ancestors, and with our own inner knowing. The crone may be frightening, but her message is one of profound importance: We must cut the chords of fear that bind us to the past and embrace the wisdom that leads us to a future of peace and understanding.
Through this painting, I hope to inspire a deeper reflection on the ways we can begin to dissolve the attachments that no longer serve us, especially in a world that desperately needs healing.
